Good to know

Frequently asked questions

How long does a bathroom take to tile?

A standard Fazeley bathroom is usually two to three days including preparation, then grout and silicone the following day.

Can you tile over existing tiles?

Sometimes, if the originals are sound and well stuck. It is quicker, but it moves everything forward off the wall and hides whatever is behind, so we will say when it is a false economy.

When can I use the shower again?

Usually 24 hours after grouting and silicone, to let everything cure fully.

Do you supply the tiles?

Most people choose their own. We will tell you how many to order including the cuts and the spares worth keeping back.

What about the old suite?

We can work around a suite that is staying, or tile after a plumber has fitted a new one - it is easier to book in the right order than to do it twice.

Do you work outside Tamworth?

Fazeley, Mile Oak, Bonehill, Hopwas and the rest of Tamworth.

01

Tanking behind the shower

Boarded and sealed above the tray and up past the shower head, taped at every joint.

02

Floors decoupled

Membrane or ply over timber floors so the movement underneath does not come through as a cracked tile in a year.

03

Setting out first

Cuts planned so they fall where they are least seen, and the pattern lines up with the window and the door.

04

Silicone, not grout, at the changes

Where wall meets floor and wall meets tray, because those joints move and grout will crack.

05

Old tiles taken off properly

Back to a sound surface, with the wall made good, rather than tiling over a problem.

06

Cleared as we go

Dust sheeted, offcuts taken away, and the room usable again as soon as the grout has gone off.

Most bathroom tiling that fails does not fail because of the tiles. It fails because of what was behind them. Fazeley has a mix of older cottages near the canal and newer estate housing off the Lichfield Road, and the two throw up completely different problems: lath and old plaster in one, and plasterboard that was never sealed in the other.

A shower wall needs a board that can take water, not a skim coat hoping for the best. That means tile backer board or a properly primed and tanked surface behind the tray, taped at the joints and carried up above the shower head. It costs a little more on the day and it is the difference between a bathroom that lasts fifteen years and one that goes soft in three.

The floor matters as much. Tiles laid straight onto chipboard will crack, because chipboard moves and tiles do not. An uncoupling membrane or a ply overlay takes that movement out, and on the older Fazeley properties with suspended timber floors that step is not optional.

After that it is setting out: where the cut tiles land, whether the pattern lines up with the window and the door, and how the grout lines meet in the corners. Setting out is what makes a bathroom look considered rather than merely finished. Tiles that sound hollow when tapped, grout that keeps cracking in the same line, or a floor that flexes underfoot are worth looking at before they are tiled over.
