Frequently asked questions

How long does a splashback take?

Most are tiled in a day, grouted and siliconed the following morning.

Do I need to empty the kitchen?

Just the worktops and anything on the walls. We sheet the rest.

Can you tile behind the cooker?

Yes, with adhesive rated for the heat. It is the part of the wall that takes the most abuse, so it is worth doing properly.

What grout colour should I pick?

Light grout looks sharp and shows marks; darker grey hides them. Behind a hob, darker is the practical choice.

Will the tiles line up with the windowsill?

We set out to make the important lines work. Where a wall or a sill is out, we will show you the options before tiling.

Do you work outside Tamworth?

Polesworth, Dordon, Birchmoor, Amington and the rest of Tamworth.

01

Set out from the eye line

The run you look at while standing at the sink is the one the pattern is set from.

02

Tight cuts at sockets

Symmetrical either side so the faceplate sits flat and covers the edge.

03

Silicone at the worktop

That joint moves with heat and steam. Grout there cracks within months.

04

Behind the hob

Heat-tolerant adhesive and a sensible layout so the busiest part of the wall is the easiest to wipe.

05

Trims or full height

A neat edge where the tiling stops, or run to the ceiling - decided before we start, not halfway through.

06

One day, usually

Tiled in a day and grouted the next, so the kitchen is out of use for as little as possible.

A splashback is a small job that is judged very closely, because it sits at eye level in the room people stand in most. In Polesworth, where a lot of the kitchens are in older terraced and semi-detached houses, the walls are rarely flat and the units are rarely dead level - and a tiled line will show both.

The work starts with the worktop line. Tiles sit on the worktop, but they should not rest hard on it: that joint moves with heat and needs silicone, not grout. The top edge either meets the underside of the wall units, runs to a trim, or goes full height to the ceiling, and which one you choose changes the setting out completely.

Sockets are what separate a neat job from an obvious one. Cuts around a socket should be tight and symmetrical so the faceplate covers the edge, and the switches should sit back on the tile rather than floating off it.

Metro tiles are the common request and they are less forgiving than people expect: a running bond shows every millimetre of a wall that leans, so they are set out from the most visible run rather than the corner. Tiles that sound hollow when tapped, grout that keeps cracking in the same line, or a floor that flexes underfoot are worth looking at before they are tiled over.
