Porcelain or ceramic tiles for your Tamworth home? How they differ in strength, water resistance and where each works best, explained simply before you choose.
For floors, wet areas and outdoors, usually yes. For walls, ceramic is often the easier, better-value choice.
Some can, if rated for floors. Porcelain is the safer choice for busy floors.
Polished ones can be when wet. Matt or textured finishes give more grip.
Yes. We will advise which suits each room.
Harder wearing and far less absorbent. Ideal for floors, wet rooms and outdoors.
Easier to cut and fit, usually costs less. Great for walls and splashbacks.
Porcelain resists water and frost. Most ceramic is for indoor use.
Porcelain is heavier and harder to cut, so it needs more skill, especially large tiles.
Porcelain floors with ceramic walls is a common, sensible combination.
Both are made from fired clay, but porcelain is made from finer clay fired at a higher temperature, which makes it denser, harder and far less absorbent. That makes porcelain the stronger choice for floors, busy hallways, wet rooms and anywhere outdoors, because it resists wear, water and frost. Ceramic is lighter, easier to cut and usually costs less, which makes it a great choice for walls, splashbacks and bathrooms that do not take heavy wear.
In practice, many homes use both: porcelain on the floor and ceramic on the walls. Porcelain is heavier and harder to cut, so it takes more skill and the right tools to fit well, especially in large sizes. Ceramic gives you a huge choice of colours, glazes and patterns for feature walls.
In Tamworth we often fit porcelain floors through kitchens and hallways on the newer estates, and ceramic metro or pattern tiles on bathroom walls, which gives a hard-wearing floor and a decorative wall without overspending.
For floors, slip resistance is worth checking as well as the material. Tiles are rated for grip, and a matt or textured porcelain with a higher slip rating is the safer choice for bathrooms, kitchens and outdoor areas where floors get wet. Polished tiles look striking but are better kept to dry living spaces.
